Kia To Show Off Sporty Concept At Detroit
This teaser sketch provides an early glimpse of an exciting new sports car concept that will be unveiled by Kia Motors at the Detroit Motor Show in mid-January.
No details are yet available, except a statement from Kia Motors stating that the concept will be a “stunning 2+2 sports car intended to turn heads while delivering superb driving enjoyment on both road and track”.
The only other information released about the concept is that it has been designed by the Kia Motors Design Studio in Irvine California.
It’s the fourth sporty concept vehicle to be released by Kia Motors in less than ten months. Back in March at the Geneva Auto Salon it unveiled a prototype, B-segment, turbocharged sportster called the Provo, built on the platform of the popular Rio small car.
That same month at the Seoul Motor Show, the Kia design team showed off a sporty, couple-style crossover based on the same platform, called the CUB, also powered by a small turbocharged engine.
Fast forward to September, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and Kia was teasing car enthusiasts again with a dramatic crossover concept called the Niro, which featured ‘butterfly’ doors that angled up when opened. This vehicle was also based on the B-segment floorpan of the Rio and hinted at a possible compact 4x4 model that Kia is contemplating for the future.
The upcoming Detroit concept appears to be yet another variation on the same theme and could well hint at the direction Kia Motors is heading with its small car design, as it plays to the sporting nature of the brand.
“These concepts all appear to be designed around a similar sporty theme and it will be interesting to see what form it ultimately takes, should this vehicle end up in production,” says Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand.
The mystery Kia sports car concept will make its international debut during the first press day of the Detroit Motor Show on January 13. The show, which is the first major automotive event of the calendar year, opens to the public from January 18-26.
