Project team working on land information system upgrade
The Director-General of Conservation says a special project team is working to ensure staff are fully using DOC’s up-graded land information management system by the middle of next year.
The database which DOC uses to manage more than 8 million hectares of publically owned land is being updated.
The up-grade is specifically aimed to combine information about the thousands of separate parcels of land DOC manages with the digital mapping techniques that the department uses to plan and track much of its field work.
DOC has worked with LINZ to jointly develop the new system which went live in September last year. The new system is working well for LINZ but requires on-going work to process DOC’s more complex data requirements.
Director General Lou Sanson says a special project team, with a budget of $2 million, has been working with the suppliers to make these changes and ensure all staff can take advantage of the system by the middle of next year.
“Staff are still able to use the database to carry out regular work but delays in implementation mean they are currently unable to access the full operational benefits of the new system,” Lou Sanson says.
“To date about 90 percent of the problems identified with the upgrade have been resolved and staff are starting to transfer onto the new system.”
