The smart city just got smarter
The announcement that two research institutes are being established at Victoria University to take up some of Callaghan
Innovation’s work is great news, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Raewyn Bleakley.
“The moves announced by the Government today are further proof that Wellington remains at the forefront of innovation in
both medical and manufacturing research in New Zealand.
“The smart city just got smarter.
“The Ferrier Research Institute’s work on complex carbohydrates in disease and human development, and the Robinson
Research Institute’s work on superconductivity and electromagnetic technologies will place them at the forefront on this
work in the world.
“Having some of our most renowned scientists working on one campus will result in huge benefits all round. The quality
of the research will be strengthened greatly, and Victoria and its students will benefit as well from top quality
research-led degrees.
“In the long run, New Zealand industry and the economy will also benefit as Callaghan will now be able to focus on
meeting the needs of business.
“This is an exciting development, and builds on the wonderful work already being done in the capital by the likes of the
Malaghan Institute and the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.”
