Hair Loss Pledge Adds up for Local Accountant

Taya Haldane, an accountant with Crowe Horwath in their Nelson office, is about to say goodbye to over half a metre of hair on December 20th.

The 24 year old client advisor will have her head shaved to raise money for the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She had thought of doing it a few years ago but took the plunge when Crowe Horwath staff decided to put in a team again this year. She offered to have her hair shaved off if she could raise at least $1000 in pledges for Relay for Life.

“I was amazed when my colleagues at Crowe Horwath and friends and family really got behind me and within a week I have now nearly reached $1000 in pledges. That makes it all worthwhile,” says Taya.

“I believe it is a great way to encourage people to make a donation to a very worthy cause – people see what I am willing to sacrifice, as my hair has taken quite a few years to grow, and I hope it helps them make a financial sacrifice with a donation. In the greater scheme of things my hair seems like a very small loss.”

Crowe Horwath Relay for Life team organiser Lila Osnabrugge says they are currently looking into other uses for the 54 centimetres of glossy dark hair and hope it can either raise further funds or be made into a wig or hair extensions.

Local hairdresser Andrea Ranieri of ZINC hairdressing has offered to do the snipping and shaving honours on Friday December 20th.

Taya is nervous about having a hairless summer. “I don’t know that there will be many options re hair dos – I guess I will need to make sure I wear a lot of sunscreen and perhaps invest in a hat or two.”
