Long dinner planned for vintage weekend

Long dinner planned for vintage weekend

Whanganui will play host to a long dinner in the middle of the historic Victoria Avenue as part of the upcoming Vintage Weekend.

On Saturday 18 January the road will be closed to cars and given over to diners who will enjoy the best cuisine Wanganui has to offer at a communal dinner entitled ‘The Boundless Banquet.’

The banquet concept arose from a meeting organised by Annie Gilroy at the Wanganui Employers Chamber of Commerce who was originally inspired to call a meeting of members in the hospitality sector to discuss the idea of a food festival for Wanganui. While the food festival concept is still on the boil the idea of an inaugural event, to compliment an existing festival, seemed an achievable short term goal and after a general call went out to all Mainstreet Wanganui Members four businesses put their hands up and began working together to achieve a long dinner.

The four businesses involved are: Element Café and Bistro, Jolt Café, Ambrosia
Delicatessen and Delicious Café and Wine Bar. All four wanted an opportunity to
show off just how good eating out in Wanganui can be as well as the variety of
outstanding talent we have in the local hospitality industry.

Together they have come up with a three course set menu that is sure to get mouths watering. The menu features local produce such as Windermere Berries and Lonely Goat cheese. The entrée and main are wine matched with New Zealand wines and the dessert will be matched with a coffee of your choice from Jolt Café. A vegetarian option is available upon prior request.

The back of the menu will also feature a culinary trail directing motorists to some of the finest produce in our region meaning foodies will be well catered for at this year’s Vintage Weekend. All this good food in an amazing setting is available for just $80 per ticket.

As a first time event the organisers have limited tickets to 72 and they expect the event will sell out fast. The theme for the evening is ‘Steam Punk’ which is a mixture of Victoriana and Science Fiction with a hint of steam technology nostalgia. Diners are encouraged to dress up for the occasion and really get into the spirit of the meal.

Shortly after the meal will be an outdoor movie screening of ‘His Girl Friday’ starring Carey Grant on the same block.

Tickets are available now from Ambrosia Delicatessen (63a Ridgway Street), Element Café and Bistro (26 Victoria Avenue) and Delicious Café and Wine Bar (132 Victoria Avenue).
