2014 Canon Media Awards - Entries now open

Canon Media Awards - Entries now open

Entries are now being called for New Zealand’s premier media event, the 2014 Canon Media Awards.

Now in their 40th year, the print and website awards sponsored by Canon since 2010 will showcase and celebrate the best of New Zealand’s newspaper, magazine and digital journalism.

To mark the awards’ coming of age in the digital era, a new website www.canonmediaawards.co.nz was launched today. The site offers an all-encompassing base of knowledge and information relating to the Canon awards. It also showcases award winning photography, front pages, stories, magazines and websites from the past three years.

The awards are owned and managed by the NZ Newspaper Publishers’ Association whose Executive Director Jenny Stiles described the new website as a huge step forward, making it easier for publishers, editors and journalists to enter the awards, while displaying a wonderful gallery of their work from previous years.

“Once again, we want to thank Canon for supporting our industry in such a meaningful way. Without their support, we could not stage an event of this size and quality, which has become a pinnacle of the media year.”

NPA editorial director Rick Neville said the number of award categories would total 67, a small increase over the previous year as a result of feedback from the media industry. Some more specific reporting and feature writing categories had been introduced along with new awards including Best Blog, Best Magazine Cover and Best Brand Campaign.

Contestants have until February 10 next year to submit their entries which will be assessed by highly-qualified judges from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Asia. Judges are selected from the ranks of experienced and respected former editors and journalists, photographers, broadcasters and academics.

The awards will be judged mostly over work done in calendar year 2013, although websites will be judged live in February/March 2014. The awards will be presented at a gala dinner in Auckland on Friday May 9.

The Canon awards presented in May this year, for work published in 2012, attracted nearly 1400 entries covering 7000 individual pieces of work. They are the largest media awards held in New Zealand and have been going since 1974.
