New Zealand Housing and Construction Quarterly released

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment today released the first edition of the New Zealand Housing and Construction Quarterly.

“This new report provides the basis for informed debate about the policy issues facing the housing and construction markets in New Zealand,” said Bryan Field, MBIE’s Manager of Modelling and Sector Trends.

“We have brought together information the construction sector, social housing, house prices and rents and have put it together in context with macro-economic data.

“The New Zealand Housing and Construction Quarterly will be a key source of data for housing and construction market information,” Mr Field said.

In this edition of the report, insights into the issue of diverging house values and rents in Auckland are analysed. The edition also features discussion of the issue of rising house prices and rents in Christchurch since the February 2011 earthquake.

Data collected through the process of bond lodgements by MBIE’s Tenancy Services has been included in the report. Tenancy Services hold private rent information on close to 90 per cent of rental tenancies in New Zealand making this the most accurate source of private rental data.

Future editions of the New Zealand Housing and Construction Quarterly will be released in February, May, August and November each year.
