New Zealand Sustainability Leader Wins Top Award

Global sustainability advocate Nick Main has won the top title of Crombie Lockwood CA of the Year at the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) 2013 annual Leadership Awards held in Auckland last night.

Main is a former CEO and Chairman of Deloitte New Zealand and most recently was Global Managing Partner, Climate Change and Sustainability Services for Deloitte Touche Tomatsu in London.

He has been a leader in shifting corporate thinking about climate change and sustainability and has held a number of high profile positions including chair of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, and deputy chair of the New Zealand Leadership Institute.

“Nick has made an outstanding contribution to business in New Zealand and internationally through leadership, innovation and a passion for ethics, corporate responsibility and sustainability. He exemplifies what we’re after in CA of the Year” says Craig Norgate FCA, NZICA Chief Executive.

Nick Main retired last year following his return from London to focus on community work at a board level.

“I’ve had a fantastic career as a chartered accountant,” says Nick. “It is a profession that goes way beyond counting numbers to play a very important and influential role in business and society.”

The Leadership Awards is a celebration and recognition of the stars in the Chartered Accounting profession and other winners included:
• Westpac 2013 Outstanding New Member Award: winner Benjamin Richmond is a sales/product specialist for Xero and former Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Most recently Ben turned around Xero’s farming solution project to deliver outcomes ahead of plans.
• MYOB 2013 Innovation Award: Joint winners of this new category were Fonterra Finance Delivery Centre’s Director Patrice Wynen and GM Reporting Services Kenneth Stephens. They led an innovative initiative delivering significant efficiencies in monthly financial reporting.
• EY 2013 Public Sector CFO of the Year Award: winner Paul Helm, CFO, NZ Transport Agency has taken the finance function through significant change since 2009 and has demonstrated inspiring leadership and integrity during the transition.
• American Express 2013 Outstanding Service to the Profession: David Barker FCA, was recognised for his service to Chartered Accounting which includes numerous roles that have contributed to NZICA at branch and national levels.
• Young MD of the Year Award: this award in association with the Young Enterprise Trust recognised winner Sian English from Columba College Dunedin who was picked from more than 800 nominations for the leadership skills she showed in running her team of eleven and their business Otepoti Products.
• EECA Business Annual Report Awards: there were a number of awards in this category, the Supreme Winner is Watercare Services Ltd and best Sustainability Report is New Zealand Post.
