Telecom’s expanding mobile network connects locals in Bay of Plenty
Locals and visitors to Bay of Plenty will have a choice of mobile provider, with Telecom announcing today that it will invest more than $175,000 on improved coverage and capacity in the Aongatete area and along State Highway 2 from Katikati to Tauranga in December.
Telecom’s investment in the Aongatete RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative) site will give locals access to voice, mobile broadband and text services over the Telecom mobile network, which has been built specifically for smart phones.
This new mobile coverage is part of Telecom's commitment to open up access to mobile data and applications for rural communities. Telecom is co-locating on every one of the Government’s RBI sites where it doesn’t already have coverage, and has an ongoing programme of new mobile site builds and upgrades to improve coverage and capacity.
Stuart Weston, Managing Director of Apata Limited, which provides post-harvest services to New Zealand kiwifruit and avocado growers, has welcomed the announcement.
"Telecom and Gen-i’s continued investment in rural mobile and data infrastructure supports Apata's strategy of providing access to essential information for our growers and team out in the orchards. That's where it really adds value," he says.
Conor Roberts, Head of Public Affairs for Telecom says, “It’s important New Zealand communities are able to access mobile services and this investment will ensure those who live, work and travel through this area will be able to make the most of what the Telecom mobile network can offer.”
Conor says rural communities and businesses have become increasingly reliant on mobile phones as their primary form of connectivity.
“Fast broadband and mobile services are crucial for the success of rural businesses, education, health providers, and in bringing rural communities together,” he says.
