New Zealanders vote for Chelsea Sugar in Best Packaging Awards
Over 15,000 New Zealanders who voted in this year’s Unpackit Packaging Awards, think Chelsea Sugar’s 1.5 kilo paper bag
is one of the best in the country.
Unpackit spokesperson Gina Dempster said for many products good packaging doesn’t have to be expensive or highly
technical.
“Many people told us they voted for Chelsea Sugar’s 1.5 kilo paper bag in the Best Packaging Award because it is so
simple, is fully recyclable and has been the same forever,” said Ms Dempster.
First place in the Best category went to a small New Zealand company, Rethink, who make cotton reusable bags for fresh
produce with Chelsea’s pantry staple taking out second best.
“We are constantly looking at ways to minimise waste for the benefit of both the company and the environment. To be
acknowledged by consumers in this highly recognised packaging award is a testament to the work we do to achieve the
least possible impact on our environment,” says Chelsea senior brand manager, Tracey McKay.
Unpackit organiser Sophie Ward said she was delighted at the public response to the Awards this year. She said the
record number of votes show that people really care about packaging and are frustrated by wasteful packaging which is
designed to end up in the rubbish.
The awards also reveal what we consider the worst packaging in 2013 and nearly 40 percent of voters chose fruit and
vegetables on meat-trays and wrapped in plastic as their most hated packaging.
The Unpackit Packaging Awards are run by Wanaka Wastebusters to encourage New Zealanders to choose smart packaging and
