Board Leadership Roles for IMSB Confirmed

Foundation chairman of the Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB), David Taipari, has been reappointed to the role for an additional 3-year term.

Mr Taipari, who was returned to the Board after the Mana Whenua Selection Body completed its process, was reappointed as Chairman following a unanimous vote by the Board’s newly elected members.

Mr Taipari has spent the majority of his career working in the Māori development and local government arenas, including roles with runanga and Māori trust boards, and in Treaty of Waitangi negotiations, economic development and conservation.

Returning board member Glenn Wilcox (Ngāti Whātua) has been appointed Deputy Chairman. Mr Wilcox is a member of the Committee of Management of the Ōtakanini Tōpū and has been an active participant in the work of the Ngāti Whātua Ngā Rima o Kaipara Trust. He was also elected to the Deputy Chairman role following a unanimous vote.

The Independent Māori Statutory Board was established in 2010 to work closely with Auckland Council to advance the interests of Māori. Mr Taipari continues his chairmanship of the Board having guided it through its important establishment phase, during which time it has undertaken a number of key projects including the development of a Schedule of Issues of Significance, completion of a Treaty of Waitangi audit of Auckland Council, and the launch of an inaugural Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau.

Significant progress has also been achieved in lifting engagement levels between Auckland Council and Māori, in Council’s response towards improved outcomes for Māori through its Māori Responsiveness Framework, and in its recognition of the unique contribution Māori identity and culture brings to Auckland city as a distinguishing point of difference.

Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples, has welcomed the reappointment of Mr Taipari as Chairman and the new appointment of Mr Wilcox as Deputy Chairman, saying: “I look forward to the leadership that they will provide both to the Board and the communities of Auckland over the next three years.”
