Enhancements in Cold Chain Shipping Services Including Thermal Blanket Bring Benefits to Customers with Temperature-Sensitive Freight
SYDNEY, November 04, 2013 – FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has recently added to its range of cold chain shipping services. These leading solutions will particularly benefit the healthcare industry and customers with temperature-sensitive freight needs around the globe.
“With the immense growth of the biomedical industry, global biopharma cold chain services are transforming healthcare worldwide through access to life saving medications and technologies. The industry is projected to grow to $9.3 billion in 2017[1] – a testament of its importance to the trillion-dollar global healthcare industry,” said David L. Cunningham, Jr., president, Asia Pacific, FedEx Express. “In Asia Pacific, we are offering a wide range of specialised solutions – from temperature control and monitoring to increased visibility to supply chain management – which are all tailored to meet our customers’ medical shipping needs.”
The latest FedEx cold chain shipping solutions[2] that help connect manufacturers in innovative ways with more markets across industries include:
· Thermal Blanket: This comprehensive, end-to-end, cost-effective global solution is ideal for customers who need their large freight shipments to travel in the 15-25°C temperature range, with insulation protection against direct sunlight, rain and humidity. Available in Japan and Singapore in Asia Pacific, this solution is especially designed for sensitive healthcare shippers and includes FedEx Priority Alert Plus® pickup and delivery in refrigerated vehicles. Additionally, it includes a proven reusable thermal blanket that does not require any duties or taxes since it is classified as an international tool of trade.
· Cold Shipping Package Option: This addition to the FedEx temperature controlled packaging portfolio is an option for customers who require a refrigerated environment of 2-8°C up to 96 hours for their shipments. Built by NanoCool, the easy-to-use, reliable, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly package achieves a temperature of 4°C in less than five minutes without the use of gel packs, and is regulatory compliant for both infectious substances (UN3373 only) and non-infectious clinical samples. This can be used in combination with FedEx SenseAware® technology and FedEx Priority Alert™ services. The new packaging is currently available in 13 markets across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
· Deep Frozen Shipping Solution: Using a liquid nitrogen dry vapour technology as an innovative alternative to dry ice, this environmentally-friendly solution helps customers to move temperature-sensitive samples and specimens at a temperature of below -150°C for up to 10 days using the CryoPort Express® Dry Shipper. This solution is classified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as a non-hazardous dry shipper and meets requirements to handle both infectious substances (UN3373) and non-infectious clinical samples. The solution is currently available in 13 markets across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
· ShipmentWatch: This new monitoring solution allows FedEx to proactively handle the monitoring of shipments from pickup to delivery using the SenseAware® application, which provides information on location, temperature, light exposure, humidity, barometric pressure and shock. Available in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore in Asia Pacific for both FedEx and non-FedEx shipments, this service gives customers additional choice when deciding how best to monitor their critical shipments.
To further provide greater efficiency for shipments transiting the FedEx Express network, FedEx recently announced the development of a 88,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Cold Chain facility in Memphis. This world-class, temperature-controlled cold chain centre, opening in fall 2014, has a heavy-weight pickup and delivery operation and employs real-time CO2, humidity and temperature monitoring.
