Holiday Parks invite locals to visit
Ever wondered what keeps attracting visitors to stay at your local holiday park? Now you’re being offered a chance to
find out – and help raise funds for charity at the same time!
Many holiday parks around New Zealand are holding an open day on Sunday 8 December.
Organised by the Holiday Parks Association of New Zealand, the objective for the open day is to update, and in some
cases change, the perception that locals may have of their holiday park.
“Many people still think of holiday parks as camping grounds with very basic facilities. In reality most of our member
parks now offer quite sophisticated facilities, including motel style units, wireless internet and great facilities for
children,” says Association Chief Executive Fergus Brown.
“The days of the kapok mattress and saggy innerspring mattresses is well and truly a thing of the past.”
The first thing many prospective visitors do is check out the communal bathroom facilities before checking in, Mr Brown
says. Many of these have been updated with some parks even offering under-floor heating.
Over 180 of the Association’s 300 members are Qualmark rated. Many holiday parks have made a significant investment in
developing their product to better meet the demands of both domestic and international visitors.
Holiday parks provide more than 20% of all commercial guest nights in New Zealand, with 65% of these being domestic
visitors.
Several of the participating holiday parks will also be taking the opportunity to raise funds for the Association’s
charity, the Breast Cancer Research Trust.
Individual holiday parks will provide locals with information on when they can visit their park.
“This will be a great opportunity for people to see what their local holiday park has to offer. And with the busy summer
holiday season fast approaching, it’s a good chance to decide if a holiday park would be a good option for any visitors
they might be having over Christmas, or for their own holidays,” Mr Brown says.
