Clearview embracing FAWC! four times over
Clearview Estate Winery and Restaurant is all about wine and food so it’s no surprise that it has embraced the region’s annual food and wine FAWC! Festival – not once, but four times.
The Food and Wine Classic sees 50 events held over 10 days and Clearview’s contribution is a winemakers’ long lunch table, an evening of wine lies, adding a blush to a picnic on the Parade, and lending culinary skills to a mystery lunch at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market.
This Saturday (2 November) Clearview’s Champion Black Reef Blush will feature in picnic hampers delivered to guests at the Pimms Picnic on the Parade being hosted by Napier’s Emporium Eatery and Bar.
Picnickers will dine at tables ocean-side at the Art Deco Masonic Hotel with bacon and egg pie, rustic pate, something sweet all washed down with traditional-style Pimms and the Clearview Rosé that won the Champion title at this year’s Romeo Bragato Wine Awards.
The next day, Clearview chef Pete Hallgarth will be joining celebrity chef Ray McVinnie at the Locavore’s Lunch, cooking for a table of 12 with food they have collected there and then at the Farmers’ Market. What the form the lunch takes will be a mystery until guests arrive with their shopping baskets in hand.
On Monday (4 November) Tim Turvey, Clearview co founder and owner, will join Trinity Hill’s John Hancock to prove who bluffs best. Guests at Deliciosa Tapas and Wine Bar in Havelock North’s Wine Lies event will be blind sampling eight wines, four whites and four reds, and then listening to the earnest explanations about the wine’s origins from each of the winemakers to determine which one is telling the truth.
“John, Sarah Watson, owner of Deliciosa, and I have selected the wines from all around the world. We’ve been quite deliberate to choose wines that will challenge our guests. We’re sure they won’t easily tell. And of course, both of us can spin great stories so they’ll have to keep their wits about them,” says Turvey.
“It could be a Pinot Gris from Alsace against a Viognier from Gisborne or Syrah from the Priorat and a Malbec from Cahor- who knows?!”
The fourth event on Saturday 9 November will be at Clearview on the Te Awanga coast. The sell-out Winemaker’s Long Lunch Table will be set amongst the leafy ambience of the vineyard and guests will be lavished with four courses created by Clearview chef, Peter Hallgarth using ingredients grown in gardens on site.
Tim Turvey will be raiding his own cellar to complement current vintages to match the seared tuna, rabbit burger, venison sausage rolls and chocolate torte feast.
“It’s going to be fun but also educational; I can’t help but get passionate about our wines,” says Tim.
