Corbel Construction appoints Tom Kelly as Programme Manager, Commercial Construction Division
Christchurch-based construction company Corbel Construction (Corbel) has appointed Tom Kelly as a Programme Manager in its Commercial Construction Division. Tom has over 30 years experience in the engineering and construction sectors and has overseen major multi-million dollar construction projects in Australia, Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
As Programme Manager, Tom’s role involves overseeing Corbel’s larger commercial construction projects to ensure they are delivered to expectations and on time and budget.
Prior to joining Corbel, Tom ran his own consultancy business in Australia working with construction companies following his return from Afghanistan in early 2012. In Afghanistan, he managed the rebuild of the Australian Embassy in Kabul. He was also involved in projects for the German, Korean, Japanese and Finish Governments, and project managed a $US362 million development of the Baghram Airport, the largest US military base in Afghanistan, involving a new concrete runway and 25 ancillary buildings.
Other career highlights include overseeing the construction of a US$1.4 billion water desalination and power generation plant in Saudi Arabia; construction of a US$75 million six star, 450 bed hotel in Dubai; and a A$15 million podium refurbishment of the National Library of Australia in Canberra, an iconic and heritage listed national landmark.
Tom has a BSc (Civil Engineering) and a Bachelor of Business Studies from RMIT in Melbourne, and an Advanced Diploma in Building Management from the Sunshine Coast TAFE, Brisbane.
Corbel Construction’s managing director Craig Jones said, “Tom’s desire to play a part in the post-earthquake rebuilding of Greater Christchurch brought him to Christchurch and to Corbel Construction. He brings extensive experience and expertise in managing substantial engineering and construction, including rebuilding damaged facilities and infrastructure in Afghanistan, to this role.”
Corbel is best-known for its delivery of small to medium sized commercial projects and mid-to-upper end residential projects. More recently, it has become involved in repair and rebuild work resulting from the Canterbury earthquakes and, on the back of this work is expanding its business more generally.
“Corbel is now undertaking larger commercial construction projects which require not only a larger workforce, but also management with proven experience in running larger scale complex construction projects. Tom’s skills will complement the Corbel team as we become increasingly involved with a number of more substantial commercial construction projects about to get underway in Christchurch,” Craig Jones said.
