Refit of heritage building takes architecture award

Refit of heritage building takes architecture award

ASB Community Trust’s Allendale House has taken out a top award in the annual Auckland Architecture Awards.

The refit of the double-bay Ponsonby villa by Salmond Reed Architects earned an award in the Heritage category.

The judges said that while many original features were sensitively restored, a new annex has a light and contemporary form.

The high level of detail in the Allendale House and Annex meant it side-stepped the “blandness of a very modern approach by balancing the decoration of the villa.”

The 2013 Auckland Architecture Awards, an official, peer-reviewed programme of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, were announced on Wednesday night (16 October) at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf.

Convenor of the Awards jury, Auckland architect Megan Rule, said the standard of the entries is reflected in the high number of awards presented.

“The global recession had an impact on many architectural practices, but we’re emerging from that with vigour,” Rule said. “It’s encouraging to see such excellent work across the board.”

The jury, which included architects Jane Rooney and Rachael Rush and Gus Fisher Gallery director Linda Tyler, had a very busy week, visiting many of the 118 projects entered into the awards programme.

The updated façade of Allendale House has also received a Resene Colour Award. The traditional and sympathetic toning by Salmond Reed Architects was recently awarded the 2013 Resene Total Colour Heritage Colour Maestro Award.

The judges said that the work is incredibly thoughtful.

“The colour palette is not punchy or overwhelming, it’s just completely appropriate. It has moved the building forward with respect.

“The respect applied makes you treasure it more as a reflection of times gone by. Neo-Georgian with a Victorian undertone coloured with complete sensitivity for enjoyment today.”
