SB Global Logistics on expansion trail with new acquisition
Leading Christchurch-owned freight forwarding and logistics company, S B Global Logistics, is expanding its operations with the acquisition of another local business.
The burgeoning firm has announced the purchase of privately owned freight forwarder Cunninghame Global Logistics, which was established seven years ago by Jaine Cunninghame. Cunninghame Global will move from its Woolston site to SB’s head office near Christchurch International Airport. The majority of staff will be retained and the business will be rebranded under SB Global Logistics.
SB general manager Reon Edwards said the acquisition was part of the company’s strategic plan to expand its core operations.
“Cunninghame Global is a highly successful freight forwarder and its purchase enables us to continue with our expansion plans and achieve a greater market presence. It is part of our strategic goal to grow our operations by acquiring highly respected, like-minded companies. We are always looking for this type of opportunity.”
Edwards said SB’s last such acquisition was when it bought Beacon Global Logistics three years ago.
“We’re positioning ourselves to cope with increased demand as the rebuild starts to get under way. We think business confidence has certainly started to grow in the past six months especially during this time, our company has seen improved volumes from existing customers, which we think reflects confidence across the South Island.”
Edwards said that activity rose sharply immediately after the February earthquakes as retailers and wholesalers urgently sought to replace stock, while earthquake specific items poured into the city.
“Those more immediate needs eased in 2012 but now we’re seeing renewed growth with more sustained business and customers are starting to plan with more certainty.”
Stephen Bateman established SB Global Logistics in 1990, initially as a freight forwarding business and expanded into logistics in 1996. Its alliance with global freight forwarding leader, DB Schenker, was established 23 years ago and has been one of the key factors in the company’s success.
