Petone retailer scores hat trick at national awards

Petone’s Mitre 10 MEGA has been named Retail Store of the Year (over 4,000m2) at the annual Hardware Awards taking out the accolade for a second time and securing a top spot at the Awards three years running.

The locally operated store claimed the coveted prize of Trade Store of the Year in 2012 and was named Store of the Year (over 4,000m2) in 2011.

Open to all New Zealand hardware stores, the Awards, now in its 18th year, recognises excellence in the industry with the Retail Store of the Year Award judged on a stiff criteria including store exterior and interior, store layout, promotions and merchandising, staff performance and extra facilities.

Mitre 10 MEGA Petone Store Owner Martyn Lockyer is thrilled with the win.

“This is just brilliant. Three top placing’s in three years is a great achievement and a real testament to the fantastic team we have.


“The team work really hard to give our customer’s what they want. I am incredibly proud of them and would like to thank them all for their commitment and dedication. We’ve got a great culture at Petone and these awards reflect that.

“To be singled out and receive industry wide recognition is fantastic. Our customers tell us they really like the Mitre 10 MEGA store format and product range so this award cements that we are getting it right,” says Mr Lockyer.

Other Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores were also recognised in the Awards.

Mitre 10 MEGA Te Awamutu was named Retail Store of the Year in the up to 4000m2 category with Mitre 10 MEGA Warkworth named as a finalist. Mitre 10 MEGA Tauranga store manager Wayne Mansell took out the Retailer of the Year Award with Liam Pawson from Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby also a finalist in this category. The Tauranga store was a Retail Store of the Year (over 4000m2) finalist while Josh Tasker from Mitre 10 Bishopdale was recognised as the Young Achiever for 2013.

The Hardware Awards celebrates excellence in New Zealand’s hardware, builders’ supply and home décor retail, as well as supply sectors of the industry, acknowledging the hard work and commitment of everyday New Zealanders. The Awards evening was held on Thursday 3 October at the Langham in Auckland.
