Wellington hosts ceremony for New Zealand's best maths students
New Zealand school students have taken out honours in a major global mathematics competition. A presentation ceremony
will be held at Wellington Girls' College, Thorndon, for the annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) sponsored
by the Commonwealth Bank. It will take place on Tuesday, 1 October, the first day of the New Zealand Association of
Mathematics Teachers 13th Biennial conference.
Several hundred thousand students of all levels of ability from schools in some 40 countries entered this year's
competition. This included almost 20,000 entries from more than 300 primary and secondary schools in New Zealand. Each
year a number of AMC medals are awarded to secondary level students for performances that are outstanding both within
their country or Australian state and overall in the competition. There are 67 AMC Medallists globally for 2013, and
three of them are from New Zealand
Prizes are awarded to approximately one in every 300 students sitting the AMC in each year with around 1000 prizes
distributed in total. In addition to the medallists, The AMC Director for New Zealand, Gus Gale, will present another
nine students with AMC Prize Awards, two Australian Informatics Competition (AIC) Awards and ten Prudence Awards to
students in the Wellington area who achieved the highest number of consecutive correct responses in their school.
