Hamilton businesses take out accolades at hospitality awards

Two Hamilton businesses take out accolades at national hospitality awards

Two Hamilton eating, drinking and entertainment venues have taken out accolades at the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence.

The Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence were announced in Queenstown last night. Pumice Restaurant in Hamilton took out the Best Restaurant category at the awards, while Yardhouse bar in Hamilton won the Excellence in Gaming section.

It is the second year running which Yardhouse has won the Excellence in Gaming section at the Hospitality New Zealand awards.

The pair were among winners in 16 categories - encompassing a vast geographic spread of hospitality businesses throughout the country.

Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson said that from an industry perspective, it was extremely encouraging to see the list of winners spread so broadly across New Zealand – including the two Waikato businesses.

“We have award winners in the big cities, the provincial centres, and in remote rural locations. From a consumer’s point of view that shows they can take confidence in the quality of hospitality establishments accessible virtually anywhere in New Zealand – and in some places it creates the enjoyable dilemma of just where to stay or visit,” he said.

Entrants into the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence were judged over a six week period by a panel of independent industry professionals who assess every competitor on a range of commercial and operational criteria – including staff training and human resources, customer service, marketing and promotional activities, and the demonstration of business growth.

“The two Hamilton winners represent two vastly different aspects of our hospitality industry – one is a suburban restaurant surrounded by commercial premises serving a corporate clientele, and the other a neighbourhood pub with outstanding gaming operations patronised by a residential customer base,” Mr Robertson said.

“One thing they both have in common though is that their owners share some common traits… a professional attitude toward running their business, a strategic approach to marketing, a commitment to staff training, and a focus on delivering outstanding customer service and products in an inviting ambience.”
