Four Auckland businesses take out accolades at national hospitality awards

Four Auckland bars and restaurants have taken out titles in this year’s Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence.

The Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence were announced in Queenstown last night. Winners were announced in 16 categories and encompassed a vast geographic spread of hospitality businesses throughout the country. The Supreme Champion title was awarded to The Batch Café in Invercargill.

The Auckland winners in the 2013 Awards for Excellence are:

Best New/Redeveloped Bar/Restaurant

Matakana Village Pub, Matakana, North of Auckland.

Best Music Entertainment Venue

Studio The Venue, Auckland.

Best Lamb Dish Under $25

The Clare Inn Irish Pub, Auckland (Slow roasted lamb shoulder rack with choux potatoes, smoked tomato ratatouille and mint pesto).

Best Beef Dish Under $25

No. 1 High Street, Auckland CBD (Steak and egg – grilled beef tenderloin with sautéed kowiniwini potato, baby spinach and enoki mushrooms, fried quail egg, merlot and demi glaze jus).

Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson said it was a reflection on the quality of food in Auckland’s bar scene that two dining awards had been garnered by the city.

“Both winners in the beef and lamb section have shown that dining out in Auckland is still affordable – giving customers a reason to enjoy convivial surroundings over a glass of wine or a pint, and topped off with award-winning cuisine,” he said.

“We’ve also seen the growing resurgence of country pubs in New Zealand gathering momentum. Not only is the country pub a hub of the local community, as it always has been, but they are now also becoming tourist attractions – as has been demonstrated by the Matakana Village Pub becoming so successful in less than a year under its new operators.”

Entrants into the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence were judged over a six week period by a panel of independent industry professionals who assess every competitor on a range of commercial and operational criteria – including staff training and human resources, customer service, marketing and promotional activities, and the demonstration of business growth.
