Survey reveals a nation of green-fingered sandwich lovers
An Omnibus survey of more than 1,000 New Zealanders reveals that the home-made, home-grown, good old fashioned Kiwi sandwich is now more popular than ever.
Over three quarters of the population (77%) say they eat a homemade sandwich at least once a week, while half of all New Zealanders (49%) say they grow – or would like to grow - at least some of their sandwich ingredients.1
The survey results coincide with the launch of Ploughmans® Bakery ‘Grow Your Own Sandwich™’ on-pack promotion giving away 150,000 Yates® seeds worth $500,000 so that green fingered Kiwis can grow their sandwich ingredients from scratch.
Renowned foodie and Ploughmans® ambassador, Helen Jackson says she is delighted with the survey results; “The research shows that Kiwis really see the benefits of home grown produce – both from a lifestyle and a healthy diet perspective.
The Ploughmans® philosophy is all about living a more simple life and taking time away from our busy lifestyles to be with family and reconnect with the things that make us happy; growing herbs and veges is a rewarding and fulfilling way to do this.
“We all know eating vegetables and grains is an important part of a balanced diet but if you constantly buy your lunch you have less control over freshness and nutrition,” says Helen.
While for most people surveyed, convenience still trumps home grown freshness, there is still a third (31%) of New Zealanders who would prefer to grow their own sandwich ingredients.1
The Ploughmans® ‘Grow Your Own Sandwich™’ promotion is in market this Spring, when sowing conditions are ideal and offers consumers a selection of 12 seed variants to choose from, ranging from cos lettuce to rocket and sweet basil to cherry tomatoes.
To receive a free packet of Yates® seeds, look for the on-pack promotion on all Ploughmans® Bakery loaves and activate the unique code online at www.growyourownsandwich.co.nz .
