AECOM appoints new Managing Director to lead growth in New Zealand

Leading global professional technical services firm AECOM has appointed John Bridgman as Managing Director for New Zealand, with a mandate to steer the company’s continued growth.

Mr Bridgman brings proven strategic, commercial and leadership capabilities to the role, and has led the business in a number of regions and major projects. 

“John’s solution orientation and business-minded approach is a great asset for our clients and business partners,” said Michael Batchelor, Chief Executive – Australia New Zealand.

“His strong client relationship and management skills are complemented by broad contractual and commercial risk management experience across a range of sectors, including transport, energy, water and vertical infrastructure.”

As Transportation Major Projects Director, Mr Bridgman has recently led a number of significant projects, including AECOM’s involvement in Wellington’s Transmission Gully motorway and the Wellington Tunnels Alliance; Auckland’s Waterview Tunnel, SH16 Causeway Upgrade and City Rail Link; and Melbourne’s East-West Link.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Bridgman said: “I am wholly committed to building on the momentum of recent years. Although we operate in a constrained environment, I am positive about the role of infrastructure and construction in the betterment of the lives of New Zealanders and the people of the wider Pacific region.

“But it won’t be plain sailing. Over the past decade, as the global investment world has become less certain, investors have become more aware of risks associated with major infrastructure and construction projects. As a result, consultancies like AECOM have evolved to become better risk managers and better commercial advisors, as well as excellent engineers, designers, architects and projects managers.”

Mr Bridgman said the future for young New Zealanders considering a career in infrastructure was promising: “The New Zealand government has signaled four key areas of focus; development of critical national infrastructure, prudent asset management, the rebuild of Christchurch and addressing the national housing shortfall. At the same time, the new Australian administration has signaled its intent to be ‘the infrastructure government’.

“This means the South Pacific is well positioned to become a major draw card for infrastructure and construction skills and investment, providing local and global career opportunities for young New Zealanders. It’s a great time to be part of the industry,” he said.

Mr Bridgman joined AECOM legacy company, Worley Consultants, as a graduate in 1982, and has led several of AECOM’s regional offices in New Zealand. He takes up the role immediately and is supported by a team of more than 560 people in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch.
