Aviation Security Service’s Hold Baggage Screening System upgrade at Wellington Airport
This Monday, Aviation Security Service (Avsec) is to undergo the second and final phase in the major upgrade of their Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) Systems at Wellington Airport.
The upgrade will meet the European Civil Aviation Conference’s amended detection system regulations that come into effect January 2014. Wellington Airport will be the first major airport in New Zealand to adopt the new system.
To replace the bag screening equipment, the airport’s baggage conveyor system that transports checked luggage through to Aviation Security screening must be disabled. The works were divided in two phases to minimise disruption:
• Phase one completed:
Monday 26 – 29 August 2013
• Phase two: Monday 16 –
19 September 2013
During phase two next week, the check-in process will operate as normal with the airport open from 0330; however checked luggage will require manual handling. Additional staff will be on hand to assist and transport luggage for passengers.
“A collaborative effort made by Wellington Airport, the airlines and Aviation Security made for a smooth operation during phase one of the upgrade last month. We will ensure the same level of service is maintained for minimal impact on passengers during the second phase,” says Wellington Airport’s Terminal Manager, Wayne Martin.
“We do appreciate there may be some inconvenience and thank travellers for their understanding and patience while the improvement occurs.”
