Infant Nutrition Council welcomes $2m travel fund

The Infant Nutrition Council (INC) welcomes the Government’s $2 million fund to help small exporters caught up in the false whey protein scare to re-establish their markets.

INC Chief Executive Jan Carey said many of her members had been hit hard by the halt on imports imposed by some countries after the scare.

INC represents more than 95% of the volume of infant formula manufactured, sold in, or exported from New Zealand.

“Many companies are still hurting, and this will help the smaller ones get up and running again.

“They will welcome the travel assistance to contact existing clients and protect business relationships that were hurt by the false alarm.

“Face-to-face contact is essential if they are to rebuild trust in their products.

“INC is also gratified to see that the New Zealand Government is working hard in the affected markets to get things back to where they were.

“It won’t be easy but I’m sure that in time it will happen.

“The New Zealand industry makes some of the best infant formula in the world and it needs to show that its food products can be trusted.”
