Strawberry Toppa proves to be Tip Top with fans

MEDIA RELEASE

Strawberry Toppa proves to be Tip Top with fans

Fans of the iconic Strawberry Toppa will be delighted to hear it will be back for a limited time early next year.

The news follows Tip Top’s announcement in August that ice cream lovers could vote online to bring back a favourite, from a selection chosen by fans of their Facebook page.

Mint Trumpet, Strawberry Toppa and Fruju Tropical Snow had been the most requested flavours resulting in some serious voting from fans keen to see their favourite brought back. The voting ended at midnight last night. More than 140,000 votes were cast over the four weeks.

Minna Reinikkala, Tip Top Group Marketing Manager says, “It’s been an exciting time for us monitoring the voting. What we love about bringing back an old favourite is how passionate our fans get about which one should win – even the team at Tip Top was divided over their favourite!

“In the end it was a very close call between Strawberry Toppa and Fruju Tropical Snow with the winner constantly changing. It just goes to show how seriously our customers take their treats!”

Originally launched in the 1950s, the Strawberry Toppa was a staple of many Kiwi summers until the turn of the century.  Mark O’Callaghan, who has been working at Tip Top for 35 years said, “I think the appeal of the Strawberry Toppa is the combination of the crunchy ice shell and the hit of delicious fruitiness. I remember enjoying them as a child on hot summer days at the beach and picnics in the park. I’ll certainly be buying them for the grandchildren when they are back on the shelves.”

Strawberry Toppa will go into production early next year and will then be available for a limited period in dairies and supermarkets nationwide. One lucky person, who voted for the winning ice cream, will get to taste the first Strawberry Toppa straight off the production line at Tip Top’s factory.

The winning ice-cream will be made without artificial colours and flavours and with natural alternatives, following Tip Top’s announcement in July to use only natural colours and flavours by January 2014.
