6 September 2013
Wholesale trade sales fell during the June 2013 quarter, Statistics New Zealand said today.
After adjusting for seasonal effects, total sales were down 1.5 percent, after increasing in the two previous quarters.
"Wholesale trade had falls almost across the board, with four of six industries having reduced sales," industry and labour statistics manager Blair Cardno said.
The largest falls were:
• Machinery and equipment wholesaling (which includes businesses that trade in consumer electronics, telecommunications equipment, professional and scientific instruments, and agricultural machinery) – down $89 million (2.0 percent)
• Basic materials wholesaling (which includes businesses that trade in agricultural supplies and products (excluding food), raw materials, and construction supplies) – down $88 million (1.9 percent).
Motor-vehicle and parts wholesaling had the largest rise this quarter – up $65 million (3.9 percent).
The trend for total wholesale trade sales has generally been increasing since the last low point in mid- 2009.
For the wholesale stocks, the seasonally adjusted value fell 0.8 percent – down to $9.0 billion.
