Midas Stores Get Racing Experience
The next time you take your vehicle for a service at a Midas store, chances are the mechanic servicing it has just
returned from working on a high performance V8 SuperTourer racecar.
Celebrating 25-years in New Zealand, the 26-store automotive service and repair franchise chain has linked with leading
V8 SuperTourer team Tasman Motorsports Group in a unique marketing partnership for 2013.
“Our Midas store owners and mechanics not only have a passion for motoring but also for motorsport and so do many of our
customers. At each race event we send along a mechanic from Midas to work with the team over the weekend,” says Midas
General Manager, Henry Epskamp.
“On Monday morning they’re back in their workshop working on a customers car.”
Working alongside the regular Tasman mechanics the team gives the Midas crewmembers their own work sheet and list of
jobs to carry out on the car throughout the weekend. Covering everything from removing and fitting wheels, visual and
spanner checks of the car, checking for any loose wiring and hoses, fluids levels to cleaning the car as well.
Tasman Motorsports Group team principal and owner Steve Horne says the unique programme has really worked well and
showcases the capabilities of the Midas store network.
“What we do here at the track isn’t much different to what they do back at the store, it’s still the same focus and
attention to detail that they would put into their customers cars. The only difference is ours is faster!” says Horne.
“We show the same great confidence in the Midas team that consumers do every day with their road car service. It’s
really no different.”
Shane Clyde from Midas Lower Hutt recently worked with the team at Round 4 of the V8 SuperTourers held at Taupo.
“I guess like a lot of guys, I’ve always wanted to work in a motorsport team on a race weekend. To come here to Taupo
and work with the Tasman guys is really great,” says Shane.
“As Steve Horne, Tasman’s team owner pointed out, what they do here at the track isn’t a whole heap different to what we
do back at the store.”
“The tools and oils are the same, and you’re still checking for the same things in order to make sure the car is
reliable and safe for the customer, or in Tasman’s case – the driver.”
“Though I’m not sure we can do a 13 second tyre change back at the shop! These Tasman guys are fast.”
Tasman Motorsports Group and Midas hit the track again at Round 5 of the 2013 BNT V8 SuperTourers Championship will be
held at Hampton Downs, September 28-29.
