Manawatu checkout operators one step closer to Checker of the Year
Last night, Manawatu’s Foodstuffs checkout operators tested their skills against each other onstage at the Grease-themed Checker of the Year competition at The Regent, with the hope of taking out the lower North Island title of Customer Service Superstar.
The top three checkers were Kamie Velkoso from Melody’s New World, Taylor Salton from Levin New World and Krystal Bennett from Masterton New World. Judges recognised their ability to scan quickly and efficiently, while also staying friendly and composed.
83 New World, Pakn’Save and Write Price checkers were judged by a team of eight senior Foodstuffs staff on their speed, presentation, customer service and accuracy as they scanned 30 items as fast as possible. Meanwhile, the competitors’ co-workers dressed in costumes ranging from Pink Ladies to T-birds, with some having a different take on the theme and dressing in Grecian togas. They supported them with banners, chants and store mascots.
“The checker of the year competition has been going since the 1970s as a fun way to recognise and reward staff for great customer service,” said event organiser Kristie McGregor.
“The stores really embrace the competitions as team events, and it’s fun to see a bit of spirited competition between them. It’s always a fabulous night for the supporters as everyone dresses up, and tough competition for the checkers.”
The night was complete with a dance troupe performing a jive as store teams arrived, while a ‘grab a bag’ competition before the finals gave supporters a chance to win gift baskets generously sponsored by Foodstuffs’ suppliers. Representatives from Foodstuffs’ national charity CanTeen were there to help hand out prizes and join in on the fun.
There are three other competitions held in Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Wellington. The 10 finalists at each of the lower North Island competitions receive $50 Foodstuffs gift cards, while the top three finalists at each event receive a $200 travel voucher and go on to compete for the grand title of 2013 Customer Service Superstar at Foodstuffs’ Training Awards in November.
“Checkout operators are their stores’ ambassadors, and their skills and customer service excellence adds the finishing touch to what we hope is a rewarding shopping experience for all Foodstuffs’ customers” said Kristie McGregor.
