The New World supermarket has been at the heart of the Te Puke community since 1978, it was decided that a bigger, brighter, more modern store was needed for the growing community. Construction was completed at the end of July.
Jon Morrison, store owner-operator says it was a huge honour to have the Rt Hon John Key officially open his store.
“I am thrilled that the Prime Minister could take some time out of his extremely busy schedule, the locals were so excited that he visited our community and it is extra special for me that he could officially open my store. The plaque is proudly grace the foyer of my store,” he says.
The local primary school sang the national anthem and performed a waiata before the official ceremony begins.
After the speeches, the plaque was unveiled and Rt Hon John Key then met with dignitaries in attendance before walking through the new supermarket.
“The staff were a little nervous but delighted to have such a special guest visit our store, they were certainly on their best behaviour,” says Jon Morrison.
