Johanneshof Cellars Top Honours and Three Trophies at Spiegelau International Wine Competition
Four medals, 3 trophies including joint ‘Producer of the Show’; not a bad effort for only entering five wines.
Johanneshof Cellars, a small boutique winery in Marlborough, New Zealand, has taken top honours in the 2013 Spiegelau
International Wine Competition.
Not only did the winery’s haul of accolades capture a cross section of their handcrafted wines including sparkling and
dessert wines, but the two Gold medal winning wines went on to receive the Trophy for Champion Wine in both categories.
The rare success of winning two trophies in one Show culminated at the end of the evening in Johanneshof Cellars being
awarded the joint Trophy for ‘Champion Producer of the Show’.

Foley said: "We're absolutely delighted.
Four medals and two trophies from five wines is hugely rewarding for our small team. Given the high standard of all
entered wines, it was totally unexpected to be named “Producer of the Show” jointly with two much larger producers. We
put a lot of effort into our wines, we don't have the capacity of making a large range of one style of wine, we make one
cuvee of each and that's it."
Competition director Belinda Jackson said it was far too hard for judges to decide which company had performed the best
for ‘Producer of the Show’. "Rather than eliminate any of them, we wanted to celebrate each one's tremendous
achievements."
Collecting awards is nothing new to Johanneshof Cellars. In the 23 years since their first vintage (1991), winemakers
Edel Everling and Warwick Foley have collectively gathered over 100 awards, trophies and accolades.
This unique winery chooses to continue using traditional methods in the unwavering belief that quality, not quantity, is
the ultimate pinnacle of the winemaker’s achievement. Their conviction to produce top quality wine is driven by an ethic
where the fundamentals of their craft are pride and passion.
These latest accolades are further testimony that sticking to the core principals of handcrafted, traditional winemaking
is not only satisfying, but also rewarding. Big rewards from a little winery, on the podium alongside the very best of
their contemporaries.
