Pins Colt Attracts Top Price at South Island Sale
A striking colt by top-drawer stallion Pins has topped the New Zealand Bloodstock South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Mixed Bloodstock, knocked down for $50,000.
Presented at Lot 29 from the draft of Phoenix Park, the colt is out of the 2005/06 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series winner Ombre Rose and is bred on the Waikato Stud cross of Pins over O’Reilly that has proven successful in the past.
The hammer fell in favour of Joe Barnes of J & I Bloodstock Ltd, with the colt’s racing future likely to be in Hong Kong.
“I came down to the Sale specifically to buy this horse as I’ve just returned from a trip to Hong Kong and they love Pins up there.”
“He ticks all the boxes and we’re very happy,” commented Barnes.
The top priced filly of the day was Lot 78, a filly by South Island sire Raise the Flag out of Emerald Fire (Honor Grades), purchased by John Foote Bloodstock for Darren Weir Racing fetching $40,000.
A half-sister to two-time Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup winner Inferno (Yamanin Vital) and 2011/12 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series winner Ortem Fire (Gallant Guru), she was offered by White Robe Lodge where her sire Raise the Flag stands.
“She had the best pedigree in the catalogue and I like the stallion Raise the Flag, he is leaving good types and I was taken by a few he had in the Festival Sale this year,” said Foote
This year’s catalogue saw 84 Lots go under the hammer with an aggregate of $ 592,400 at an average price of $10,041 and a clearance rate of 78%, an increase of 6% from 2012.
The leading vendor by aggregate was White Robe Lodge selling six lots for a total of $91,700, with their resident sire Raise the Flag the leading sire by average (two or more sold) with three of his progeny selling for an average price of $21,667.
The leading vendor on average was Janine Dunlop’s Phoenix Park for the second year in a row with three horses selling for an average of $25,333, including the top Lot of the day.
The leading purchaser for the Sale was J & I Bloodstock Ltd, spending a total of $68,000 over three Lots for an average of $22,667.
