Furniture award finalists on show at the Home Ideas Centre
Judging for the 2013 Forest and Wood Industry National Training Awards takes place next week. This will determine which of the 55 entrants will become finalists in the 12 categories and go on to the Awards dinner at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre on September 13.
Of the 55 entrants, 10 talented learners are in the running for the Trainee of the Year Furniture category and have constructed a unique free-standing item of furniture. Entrants are all current furniture apprentices or trainees with Competenz, the Industry Training Organisation for Forestry, Wood Manufacturing and Furniture.
There are five judges for the Trainee of the Year Furniture category including Clare Macintosh from the Home Ideas Centre, Donna Jones from The Design Option, Rod Carron and Colin White who are both Competenz furniture assessors, and Alistair Murray who is an executive officer of the Furniture and Cabinetmaking Association of New Zealand (FCANZ).
“It is exciting to see each year what these talented furniture apprentices design and build, they can be quite intricate and out of the box. These students are certainly the future of the furniture industry” says Donna Jones of The Design Option.
The items of furniture have been freighted from around the country by Danske Mobler and Arnotts Carriers and will be on public display from August 7 at the Home Ideas Centre in Parnell, Auckland. Judging will take place on August 13 and finalists will be marked in the exhibition.
The five judges who will judge the other 45 entries in all other categories include Matt Bond of Nelson Forests Ltd, Tony Desmond of Woodenlt Ltd, Bill McCullum from Hancock Forest Management (NZ) Ltd, John Stulen from Innovotek, and Brett Armour from Craig Pine Ltd. All five judges have extensive industry knowledge and well-known in their field.
