July’s colder weather saw peak demand hit 1730 MW, while for the same period in 2012, the peak was 1690MW. Peak demand could drop as we move through August as NIWA are predicting a warm, early spring with above average temperatures for August through to October for the North Island.

NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 4 August 2013

ELECTRICITY
There were nine car vs pole/pillar accidents during the course of the week in West Auckland, South Auckland, Panmure, West Harbour, Titirangi, East Tamaki and Glen Eden. The Glen Eden accident affected hundreds of customers in the area overnight, however field crews worked hard to get the power restored within hours.

There were building fires reported in Penrose, Papatoetoe, Pt Chevalier, Waitakere, Mangere East and Henderson Valley, requiring our crews’ attendance at the scenes to isolate the power to ensure the safety of the customers and their properties.

Reports of lines down and low hanging lines in Avondale, Mt Roskill, Blockhouse Bay and Mt Eden came in during the week. These were caused by over height vehicles driving through them. No customers were affected and the lines were repaired quickly.

GAS TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
There were three incidents involving gas last week. A contractor struck a pipe while carrying out work in Orakei and a reported smell of gas on Shore Road and in Upper Queen St. Subsequent investigations showed no trace. PROJECTS

University building gets a boost
Work continues on increasing the power supply capacity at the University of Auckland’s Science building on the corner of Symonds & Wellesley Streets in Auckland City.

During the mid-year semester, Vector laid ducts for new cables that will provide an additional electricity supply capacity for the expansion and refurbishment of the University building.

The work involved open trenching in the road and footpath to allow installation of cable ducts. Once the University has completed their refurbishment, new cables will be installed inside the ducts and there will be some electrical works undertaken within the Science Building. The work includes the replacement of two existing transformers, and the installation of two additional transformers and new switchgear.
