Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast’s finest homes revealed
A new home build in Kaiteriteri and a renovation in Nelson have been named this year’s top homes, winning Supreme Awards
in the Nelson / Marlborough / West Coast Region Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year.
Inhaus Developments Limited scooped six regional awards, including the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the
House of the Year and the James Hardie New Homes $450,000 - $600,000 category for a home in Kaiteriteri. The company
also received the Craftsmanship Award, the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Resene Sustainable Home
Award.
Scott Construction Limited was awarded the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the Renovation of the Year, as
well as the ITM Renovation Award $250,000 - $500,000 for a home in Nelson.
Inhaus Developments Limited’s build impressed judges who said the builder did a fantastic job of meeting his client’s
brief of a unique holiday home that complemented its environment.
“Situated on a south-east facing site with expansive water views, this home’s exterior is completely clad in vertical
cedar, the finish blending beautifully with the natural tones of the native bush.
“Exhibiting faultless custom detail and impressive unconventional building methods, including natural timber vanity
units and incredible exposed screw fixings in the lounge’s ply ceiling, the builder’s execution of detail is
spectacular,” they said.
“Coupled with a challenging site and a modest budget, this home is a stand-out example of a build that was difficult to
fault.”
Judges went on to say that Scott Construction Limited’s renovation is a stunning example of a simple mid-60s home
brought forward into the 21st century without losing the home’s original character.
“Inherent difficulties with site access and structurally supporting the existing home were involved in the execution of
this two-storied extension and renovation, however the builder has managed to transform this build into a
well-proportioned, eye-catching home.
“A curved floating timber façade is beautifully crafted, employing creative techniques to successfully execute while
still meeting the architect’s brief and the client’s budget.
“Clever use of natural light and a new stairwell create an illusion of space the builder can be proud of – the team have
done a beautiful job of overcoming brief, budget and site difficulties.”
The builders’ entries were recognised by members of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Registered Master Builders
and the local building industry at Marlborough Convention Centre on Saturday, 3 August.
There were 12 Gold Award winners from the Nelson / Marlborough / West Coast region which will now be assessed alongside
Gold Award winners from the 10 other regions of the competition to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will
be announced in August.
National category winners, Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the Renovation of the Year and the House of the
Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.
