Leighton Contractors secures $30 million Wellington road maintenance contract
Leighton Contractors has recently commenced a three year, $30 million road maintenance and services contract awarded by
Wellington City Council (WCC).
Under the contract, which includes a two year extension option, Leighton Contractors are maintaining a combined 617km of
road and footpath (247km of road, 370 kilometres of footpath), extending south from Mt Victoria, including the airport
and Seatoun/Miramar areas, and west to Happy Valley. Services also include street litter collection, road corridor
vegetation cutting and weed spraying. Leighton Contractors New Zealand General Manager, Andrew Stevens, said: “This
contract serves a vital part of the region’s road network – it’s the critical link between Wellington’s CBD, the airport
and surrounding suburbs.”
“Working with the City Council, we look forward to contributing our experience from similar maintenance contracts and
major New Zealand transport projects, to benefit road users and continue our role in developing and maintaining
Wellington’s key infrastructure.”
Leighton Contractors has provided similar maintenance services across Auckland’s CBD and inner western suburbs as a key
member of the Auckland Road Maintenance Alliance. In Wellington, the company was part of the team responsible for the
successful refurbishment of the Mount Victoria and Terrace tunnels and is currently undertaking their maintenance. Other
major road developments delivered by Leighton Contractors in New Zealand include the Northern Gateway Toll Road, SH20
Manukau Motorway Extension and Newmarket Viaduct replacement project.
“Our operations in New Zealand have grown steadily over the past 10 years. We now have an on-theground workforce of more
than 700 people across our infrastructure, mining, services and telecommunication operations,” Mr Stevens said. Leighton
Contractors is also delivering the roll out of New Zealand’s Ultra Fast Broadband in Auckland in partnership with
Chorus, as well as the development, management and operation of the Favona underground gold mine.
Committed to New Zealand infrastructure development, Leighton Contractors heads one of two consortia shortlisted for the
Transmission Gully PPP road project north of Wellington. The project involves financing, designing, building,
maintaining and operating the planned link between Linden and MacKays Crossing for up to 25 years.
