New way to pay means less time in the queue – Smartpay

Queues at bars, cafes and events should start moving a little faster soon with the introduction of contactless EFTPOS terminals into New Zealand.

Last month local payments provider Smartpay introduced the mobile ‘no touch’ EFTPOS terminals into the country. Tap and Go works by customers hovering or tapping their card over the terminal and the card is scanned without having to be swiped or inserted. It’s faster and the customer doesn’t have to hand their card over – they can just put it straight back in their wallet.

The Four Kings sports bar on Wellington’s Courtenay Place has been trialing the new terminal and owner Jose Ubiaga says so far it gets the thumbs-up.

“Our staff are finding it’s great because it’s less fiddly and it’s faster. Customers have been curious about the new way to pay as many don’t even know their cards can work this way.”

Mr Ubiaga says the new terminals are a smart business move for a busy bar like his – mainly because they save time. He says even though they might have four terminals operating on a busy night there will always be people waiting to pay while staff wait for a terminal to come free.

“On a big game night you might be serving more than a thousand customers so if you can save ten to fifteen seconds per transaction it all adds up.”

He says that when around 85% of payments are made by eftpos, anything that streamlines the process is welcome.

Smartpay’s Manager of Strategy and Operations, Marty Pomeroy says he expects the terminal will take off in New Zealand as businesses look to keep on the cutting edge of technology and for better ways to do business.

He says the technology is already being used extensively and successfully throughout Asia and America at sporting events, fast food restaurants, bars, cafes, taxis and convenience stores to significantly speed up payments.

“This technology has huge potential for retailers, especially in places where checkout time matters.”

Cards that work with the new terminals will have a contactless logo on them and either a PayWave logo (for VISA) or PayPass logo (for MasterCard).

Smartpay is the largest New Zealand owned and operated EFTPOS provider and it works to bring the latest in EFTPOS and payments technology to its customers in New Zealand and Australia.
