Fairness at Work Campaign Launch
22nd July, Auckland
The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions is launching a major campaign in Auckland next week opposing the Government's
cuts to employment rights.
At the launch, CTU president Helen Kelly will announce rallies, stop-work meetings and a national day of action calling
for fairness at work.
Helen Kelly says “life is hard enough for many Kiwis at the moment. One of the main problems is that wages are just too
low. But the government continues to push through laws that will make it worse for workers. That is why we are strongly
opposing recently proposed employment law changes.”
"Hundreds of workers have already written submissions against this law, and people are starting to get active as they
realise the impact it will have on pay and conditions in New Zealand.”
“Our campaign is also promoting employment laws that encourage collective bargaining as the way to lift wages and more
productive and safe workplaces. This is a complete contrast to the Bill which is actually all about reducing the ability
of workers to get a reasonable agreement on their wages and conditions”.
The campaign launch will feature workers who will be affected by the law changes. Helen Kelly and workers will be
available for interview after the launch.
