RISING KIWI SPORTS STARS SHOW WHY THEY’RE HUNGRY
Hunger to succeed is something up-and-coming surfer Ella Williams knows all about. Now her drive and determination have
been recognised by the breakfast cereal that’s been fuelling the nation’s hunger since 1928, Weet-Bix.
Ella joins other junior Kiwi sporting sensations, footballer Tyler Boyd and snowboarder Carlos Garcia Knight, in the
latest Weet-Bix campaign that asks youth to ‘show why they’re hungry’.
Child and family psychologist, Cherin Abdelaal Selim, says teenage years are the time to lay down a foundation for
successful adulthood.
“Part of the foundation is good diet, which Weet-Bix delivers on, but giving kids good role models to aspire to also
impacts on this. Teenagers are more inclined to follow the example of people they relate to, so providing them with
positive, yet real, role models is vital.”
Whangamata local, Ella Williams, is no stranger to channelling her efforts into successful endeavours. The eighteen year
old has been surfing since she was four years old and confesses that practice makes perfect.
“I started competing when I was six and I’ve loved surfing ever since. My recent successes on the world tour have been
amazing, but I appreciate them all the more because of the hard work that’s gone into achieving them - quite literally
fourteen years of practice.” And Ella admits she’s not done yet.
“I don’t ever want to reach a point where I feel like no-one has anything to teach me. There’s always more to learn, and
always people to learn from.”
Ella’s Weet-Bix sponsorship not only gives her greater freedom to pursue her surfing dreams, but also the right fuel to
achieve them.
“What you’re surfing on makes all the difference – I don’t mean the board, I mean what you’ve started your day with.
When you’ve got a good breakfast behind you, you totally notice it and Weet-Bix is perfect for getting me going in the
morning,” says Ella.
Weet-Bix Senior Brand Manager, Jessica Manihera, says Ella was a clear choice for Weet-Bix sponsorship. “Weet-Bix is all
about giving your body the fuel it needs to reach its full potential, which is why we’re asking Kiwi teens to show us
what they’re hungry for in life. Ella is a shining example of a young New Zealander who has dedicated herself to her
dreams and is now achieving on a world stage.
“We’d like all young people to pause for a moment, while their eating breakfast and staring into space around the
kitchen, to ask themselves what they’re hungry for and how they can apply themselves to achieving their aspirations and
being their best selves,” says Mrs Manihera.
