Author releases worldwide Android guide in Tauranga

Tauranga author Bryan Winters has launched a ‘how to’ book on how to drive your smart phone.

Mr Winters, who teaches Information Technology, says it took him a while to write a book about the subject. Faced with learning his new Android smartphone, he couldn't find a good illustrated guide to help him. So he wrote 'The Starter's Guide to Android 4'.

It's being launched through Paper Plus bookstores in the Bay of Plenty and has also been picked up by an Australian publisher, who is working the worldwide book sales.

Mr Winters says that "since Paper Plus is doing a promotion of local authors in conjunction with Oceanbooks (www.oceanbooks.co.nz), it seemed a good idea to launch the book as part of the event this month.”

He says that many people don't realise they're in fact buying a handheld computer when they get an Android smartphone. Consequently they only learn 10% of what it can do. Some people watch videos on the internet to learn their smartphone.

“This book is for those who like to turn pages, and see illustrated instructions while they take their time learning their phone at home – or on holiday. Sometimes a video can be too quick, and you're always rewinding it to something you missed.”

So why focus on Android 4? “Good question,” he says. “Android is not the actual phone, it's an operating system, just like Windows is an operating system on your PC. There are different versions of Android. Versions 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 are the latest, which is what the book teaches.”

He will be in all seven Bay of Plenty Paper Plus stores during the week starting July 14. He encourages Paper Plus customers to bring their phones along to the store when he's there. He says, “you never know, I might be able to show you a trick or two.”
