Vector Helps to Bring Better, Brighter Futures
Vector is helping thousands of children in the Tamaki area to fast track their learning and equip them for future
success.
New Zealand’s leading energy and infrastructure company, dedicated to building “better, brighter futures”, has donated
$100,000 to the Manaiakalani Education Trust to enable them to complete their wireless Tamaki Learning Network in the
area.
Vector is delighted to be helping the Tamaki community to provide the learning infrastructure and programmes that give
children access to high end e-learning tools to boost their educational results.
In addition, Vector is making available around 70 of its power poles in the area to house the equipment needed for the
wireless network.
While Vector delivers energy and technology services to more than 700,000 customers across the country, it sees this
project in Tamaki as a way to offer practical help to a community in need, and to see real results.
NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 16 June 2013
ELECTRICITY
Sunday’s short but intense storm was responsible for many small outages, primarily in the north and east of the city.
High winds caused trees to strike lines in all but one of the outages. The remaining outage was due to a car versus pole
incident.
Crews worked tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible through the night.
Five car versus pole incidents occurred during the week, in Te Atatu, Grey Lynn, Onehunga, Papakura and Albany. There
was no disruption to power with these incidents.
The Fire Service required our crews on site quickly to isolate services for a building fire in Waimauku that contained
dangerous goods. The building’s power was immediately isolated for safety. Fire Service had three other requests for
power isolation during the week, for a house fire in Henderson and two separate house fires in Otahuhu.
GAS TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
The University of Auckland’s Chemistry block was the scene of a gas strike by a third party contractor during the week.
Repairs were quickly made. A smell of gas was reported in an area of Avondale. An investigation showed no faults or
detection of gas.
PROJECTS
Tiverton/Wolverton Corridor
While Auckland City’s major widening and upgrade of Tiverton and Wolverton roads continues, Vector’s work is soon to
wrap up. Vector’s part in the multi-million dollar project has been to relocate more than two kilometres of cables
underground along the main arterial road as well as relocating Vector gas and Comms assets in New Windsor Road. The
project has been particularly challenging for our crews working within the confines of the busy Tiverton-Wolverton
corridor, which on average carries more than 30,000 vehicles per day. Vector’s work will finish at the end of this
month.
SHORTS
Vector owns over 17,737 kilometres of overhead and underground lines in the greater Auckland area, and 12,752 of gas
pipe lines, almost half of which supply gas to Auckland.
