Wendy’s to Reopen in Christchurch

Wendy’s to Reopen in Christchurch

Building consent issued for new Wendy’s Hornby, company looking to fill 50 jobs

Wendy’s will reopen in Christchurch at long last, with a new Hornby restaurant expected to open by the end of the year.

The city’s first Wendy’s restaurant in Hereford St lasted only three months before the 2011 earthquake forced it to close and the site still sits within the red zone.

With building consent now issued and the process of appointing a contractor underway, the company hopes its new Hornby site will prove a more permanent home.

The new restaurant on Main Road South will also mean the creation of 50 new jobs for staff and management, with Wendy’s calling on staff from the old Hereford St store to get in touch.

Wendy’s CEO Danielle Lendich says the company has big expectations for Hornby with the Hereford St restaurant proving overwhelmingly successful over the three months it was open.

“The most common question we get asked on Facebook is when are we going to reopen in Christchurch. We’ve been working on it for some time, but it’s been a case of being patient and finding the right location.

“We were actually looking at this site prior to the earthquake, but it’s taken this long to work through the issues with the landlord, insurance company and local council.”

Lendich says Wendy’s would like to reemploy staff from the original store. “We would love to work with some familiar faces. We’ve tried to keep in touch over the past few years but understand that people move on. Any of our previous employees should contact us if they’re interested in working for us again.

“We’ll also be advertising openings on our website later this year, so potential employees should keep an eye on the site – www.wendys.co.nz/employment.”

The opening of new restaurants in Hornby, Whangarei and Hamilton over the next few months will bring the total number of Wendy’s restaurants to 22. Lendich says the New Zealand-owned franchise is also looking at other sites around Christchurch and the South Island, with a target of 50 stores nationwide over the long term.
