Green light for extensions to Halswell supermarket and shops

Work on extending the New World Halswell supermarket and rebuilding the adjacent shops is expected to start later this year and take 12 months to complete.

The $10 million project will see the supermarket extended by 950m2 and the earthquake damaged shops rebuilt.

Roger Davidson, General Manager, Property and Retail Development, for Foodstuffs South Island Ltd, said that Halswell was a significant growth area and the supermarket needed to expand to cope with this population growth.

“At this stage we have just received resource consent which allows us to embark on the detailed design which will hopefully see construction begin later this year,” he said.

Additions to the supermarket will include extra retail floor space, checkouts and a café.

“The proposed car parking area will provide an additional 131 parking spaces, with a total of 429 spaces associated with the supermarket and 36 parks for staff and covered cycle parking for 24 bikes. The existing supermarket car park entrance on to Nicholls Road will be altered and an additional entrance will be created to improve traffic flow,” he said.

The rebuild of the shops will be undertaken in stages to ensure tenants can remain open for trading throughout.
