Thinking Outside Square Nets $9m

Thinking Outside Square Nets $9m

The reported $9 million brought into Wellington by the Aussie Rules match in April shows how thinking outside the square can pay big dividends for the city, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce CEO Raewyn Bleakley.

“On the face of it this is a great result, and those who organised it must be congratulated.

“This is not that much short of what the premiere of The Hobbit brought in, which goes to show that a little imagination can go a long way.

“This was thinking outside the square in a way Wellington is becoming renowned for, and we must continue to come up with ideas like this if we are to diversify and grow our economy.

“The good news is that says twice as many Australians as the 5000 who flew in could attend next year, as long as there are flights and beds available.

“That would be fantastic and would really put this on our events calendar.

“The city will also no doubt benefit from the exposure the match brought, with 1.4 million Australians reportedly watching it on TV.

“We note that the report was commissioned by the AFL.  We look forward to WCC’s assessment of the benefits.”
