Kirkcaldie & Stains celebrates 150 years
A Brief History
Kirkcaldie & Stains is one of New Zealand’s oldest businesses still trading under its original name.
When Scottish born John Kirkcaldie and Englishman Robert Stains established their first store in a shed on the beach at what was then known as Port Nicholson in November 1863, they started a tradition that continues today.
The business moved to its present site in the heart of Lambton Quay in 1868 and continued to grow, its growth and prosperity matching that of the city. In 1886 Robert Stains returned to England and John Kirkcaldie and his sons headed the business.
Financial difficulties during the depression of the 1930s forced the Kirkcaldie family to sell the business to British Overseas Stores. After 50 years of British control the store was returned to New Zealand ownership in 1984 and then became a publicly listed company in 2002.
During its long history Kirkcaldie & Stains has survived many upheavals, including earthquakes, fire and flood. The Tea Room was the scene of a notorious shooting in 1898. Over the years the premises have undergone much renovation, culminating in the late 1980s with a complete reconstruction behind the original facade.
Through all of the changes the store has continued the tradition of its founders and Kirkcaldie & Stains stands proud today as New Zealand’s premier department store.
Celebrating
On Saturday 1 June Kirkcaldies will launch a month long instore celebration of this momentous milestone. The Lambton Quay windows will tell the story of Kirkcaldie & Stains. The stores archives will be on display for all to enjoy.
The Pirongia Clydesdales will lead a cavalcade from Bunny Street to the front of the store arriving at 11.30am on Saturday 1 June where Denis Kirkcaldie, great grandson of the founder accompanied by other family members will cut the ribbon to launch the pro¬motion.
The store will be suitably dressed for the occasion. Kirkcaldies will continue the celebrations right throughout June with very special Birthday offers throughout the store along with demonstrations, tastings and visiting experts.
Giving Back to The Community
The store has selected the Wellington Hospitals & Health Foundation, official fundraiser for Wellington Children’s Hospital as its Birthday charity and is committed to raising funds for this worthwhile charity through a variety of activities during 2013.
The instore promotion will conclude at the end of the month with the cutting of the Birthday cake and a charity fundraising dinner, however the celebration and fundraising continues all year.
150 years is an impressive milestone and a true celebration of a Wellington icon and a fine tradition.
