Increase in Maori and Pasifika Training a Good Move

Increase in Maori and Pasifika Training a Good Move

The Industry Training Federation (ITF) has endorsed the announcement by Government today of a major expansion of Maori and Pasifika Trades Training. ITF Chief Executive Mark Oldershaw stated that it was another endorsement of the success and importance of industry training.

The Government today signalled an extension of M?ori and Pasifika Trades Training to 3,000 places as part of Budget 2013. There are currently 600 places spread across the existing He Toki ki te Rika and Pasifika Trades schemes, which were set up by the current Government in 2011.

Mr Oldershaw stated that the announcement supports some recent research commissioned by the ITF on a successful Maori trainees and builds on recentGovernment announcements about apprenticeships.

Maori learners are getting more out of workplace-based training in recent years.

“With Maori and Pasifika youth set to become an increasingly larger proportion of the working population in upcoming years the announcement today is very timely.”

“It’s critical that we encourage more Maori and Pasifika youth into industry training and make sure we do all we can toensure they succeed and thrive.
