AgResearch capitalises its strengths to boost science

A mammoth $100 million investment in AgResearch’s core science resource will help boost its potential to support exports from the primary industries in reaching $60 billion by 2025, on current policy settings.

“It is no secret that some of AgResearch’s physical scientific infrastructure is getting a bit creaky,” says Dr William Rolleston, Federated Farmers Vice-President.

“It was a genuine pleasure to be at the unveiling of an impressive roadmap that will also see the “hubbing” of primary research capabilities at and with Lincoln University.

“This is a major investment in science and is reason for celebration because it provides the means to attract and retain the best agricultural scientific talent from around the world.

“Today is about shortening the journey from innovation. The hybrid vigour of innovation and collaboration is marked by the new Lincoln Hub comprising DairyNZ, Plant & Food, Landcare Research, Lincoln University and of course, AgResearch.

“The encouraging thing is that AgResearch is looking to use its own resources to fund what amounts to a transformation of science research in support of New Zealand’s premier exports. It will then move to concentrate centres of specialisation at its various campuses.

“Federated Farmers is impressed with what we have seen to date and believe it provides a very good template for other research institutions and universities to follow,” Dr Rolleston concluded.
