AFL match another coup for events capital
The AFL match between St Kilda and the Sydney Swans at Westpac Stadium looks to have been another successful events coup for Wellington, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce CEO Raewyn Bleakley.
“On the face of it, the match was a success, both on and off the field.
“The clubs were impressed with what we had to offer in the way of facilities and the ground, which was perfectly suited to their game, and the 4,500 or so fans who flew in from Australia for a couple of nights appeared to enjoy themselves around town.
“That’s a big tick for the stadium and the organisers.
“I think the fact that 22,500 people turned up shows this event is likely to have a future in Wellington.
“It’ll be interesting to see what the cost-benefit study shows, because that’s an important factor in future expenditure decisions by the council regarding this event. A win-win on the numbers would bring further accolades for those who worked extremely hard to bring it here.
“Let’s hope this will be another event that Wellington, as the events capital of New Zealand, can add to its hugely diverse portfolio in the future.”
