Tourism showcase worth tens of millions of dollars to NZ

Tourism showcase worth tens of millions of dollars to NZ

Next week more than 1000 international and New Zealand delegates will jet into Auckland to attend TRENZ (21-24 April), the tourism industry’s annual showcase, worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the country and over $2.34m to the host region.

TRENZ is the $23.4 billion New Zealand tourism industry’s major international marketing event, bringing together hundreds of international tourism and travel buyers from around the globe to negotiate new business deals with around the same number of New Zealand tourism operators.

“In total, the 290 international Buyers attending TRENZ 2013 have told us they expect to send about 700,000 visitors to New Zealand over the coming year, over half our holiday arrivals. This is worth tens of millions of dollars of new business to New Zealand,” says Martin Snedden, Chief Executive of the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand which organises and manages TRENZ together with key industry partners.

“These Buyers come to TRENZ to find out what New Zealand has that is new and exciting that they can sell to clients in their home markets. 80% of Buyers at last year’s event told us TRENZ is more important than any other marketing and purchasing activities they undertake and almost 60% expected an increase in the number of passengers travelling to New Zealand as a result of their attendance,” says Mr Snedden.

“TRENZ 2013 will also inject more than $2.34 million into Auckland’s economy, with delegates spending on hotel accommodation, meals and functions. TIA spends hundreds of thousands of dollars staging the four-day event, which is being held this year in The Cloud and Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront.”

ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development) Manager Tourism Jason Hill says it’s an outstanding opportunity to be the host region for TRENZ 2013.

“The event has a dual benefit of showcasing our diverse region to the influential international buyers and media and pumping money into the Auckland economy. The delegates will stay around five nights in a range of city hotels and experience our bars, restaurants and activities,” he says.

“Hosting TRENZ in the traditionally quieter month of April is also a bonus and will help to extend the strong visitation that Auckland has experienced throughout the summer months.

“Auckland’s tourism product offering has grown considerably in the last few years and we are looking forward to promoting both our products and our eclectic region to the influential line-up of international Buyers and media,” Mr Hill says.
