New Zealanders Love To Travel – And
Sacrifice And Save For Their Holidays – Just Don’t
Confuse Us With Aussies When We’re On Our
Travels

cutting back on clothes, dining out and presents
New Zealanders have always been known as intrepid travellers, and, although some people think the adventure traveller tag is overrated, it doesn't stop the majority of Kiwis from sacrificing things in order to fund their travel bug.
A survey by recently-launched travel deals and price comparison site Cheapflights.co.nz, found that over 95 per cent of New Zealanders consider travel an important part of their life.
Over 56 per cent consider travel ‘a necessity’ – with more than a third sacrificing clothing spend to get away on holiday, and 33 per cent prioritising travel over dining out.
More than 78 per cent of respondents take one or more short holiday (fewer than five nights) each year – and 62 per cent take one long holiday (more than five nights) or more annually.
When it comes to paying for their holidays, nearly 75 per cent of New Zealanders save all year long and over 71 per cent are long-term planners, booking their holidays over three months in advance. At the other end of the spectrum, 28 per cent take a more impromptu approach to travel and plan their trips less than three months in advance, with just over 13 per cent funding their travel on credit cards.
New Zealanders are planning to holiday at home, with 90 per cent of respondents saying their upcoming short holiday of fewer than five nights will be at home and just under 50 per cent choosing to take their next long holiday domestically.
And while we love travelling overseas, there are a few common complaints that we agree on. Kiwi travellers named being confused with Aussies and sheep jokes as their top gripes when abroad – ahead of "people thinking we all know each other", All Black comments, and, more recently, Hobbit references.
The Cheapflights.co.nz survey found Kiwis most missed the great outdoors while overseas with fresh air a close second. New Zealanders overseas also missed their kai – including Kiwi Flat Whites, decent pies, proper fish and chips, Marmite/ Vegemite and Pineapple lumps rounding out the most missed food list.
Cheapflights.co.nz spokesperson and Kiwi traveller away from home Kara Segedin said: “It seems we Kiwis really do have the travel bug – but who’d have thought over a third of us would choose getting away over treating ourselves to the latest fashions?”
“Everyone from home I’ve ever met on my travels misses quality Kiwi food, particularly a decent coffee. Yes, we could do without the Aussie mix ups – but this survey just shows how much we love travel and how much we’re prepared to forgive to get our holiday fix.”
